Choose built-in only if the exact model's manual allows it and gives you clearances you can meet. Choose freestanding if the fridge will have open air around it. A freestanding fridge shouldn't go into a cabinet unless its manual says so, because trapped heat is the risk and warranty exclusions can apply.

## The short version

| Check before buying | Built-in setup | Freestanding setup |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Placement | The manual must allow it for that model | Open floor space, away from cabinets unless the manual says otherwise |
| Ventilation | Often through the front; keep the grille clear | Air around the back and sides, sometimes the top |
| Clearances | Can be small, but still required | Often larger, and they add to the footprint |
| Door | Check the hinge side and how far it opens in the opening | Check nearby walls and furniture |
| Capacity | Rated numbers assume standard bottles | Same |

The labels on a store page are only a starting point. The rest of this guide shows why.

## What the manuals actually say

We read the installation sections for seven NewAir models and one Wine Enthusiast product page. The wording ranges from a flat no to a detailed yes.

The AWR-520SB and AWR-290DB show why you can't stop at the store page. NewAir's [AWR-520SB page](https://www.newair.com/products/newair-52-bottle-stainless-steel-built-in-wine-refrigerator) says it can “slide into base cabinets,” while one line of its manual warns against installing it inside cabinets. The sensible reading is that an open-front slot with a clear grille differs from a closed cabinet, but that's our interpretation. Only NewAir can confirm it.

## Why a freestanding fridge can't simply go in a cabinet

A compressor fridge moves heat out of the cabinet and into the room. If that heat can't escape, the fridge may not hold its temperature, and it may run harder. The [NWC028SS01 manual](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0066/7595/5769/files/NWC028SS01Trilingual_Product_Manual_v1.0.pdf?v=1633638232) ties its 5-inch clearance at the back and sides directly to air circulation for the compressor and condenser.

There's also a warranty reason. The NewAir manuals we read exclude damage from misuse, including “inadequate air circulation in the room.” We can't tell you how a claim would be decided, but ignoring a clearance gives the manufacturer a reason to say no.

> **Don't confuse the look with the rating**
>
> A stainless door and a recessed grille don't make a fridge safe to enclose, and they don't make it safe outdoors. The NWC028SS01 manual says not to store or install it outdoors, and the NWB076BS00 manual is “designed for indoor, home use only.”

## Who should pick which

**A built-in model suits you if** you have a defined slot under a counter or in a run of cabinets, you can keep the grille unobstructed, and you have a manual or written answer that covers the clearances. It won't suit you if you're relying on a product page's word “built-in” alone, or you're planning to close it behind a cabinet door. The NWC028SS01, AWR-290DB and ABR-960 manuals warn against that.

**A freestanding model suits you if** you have floor space with room to breathe, you may want to move it, or you rent and can't change the cabinets. It won't suit you if you have a tight slot. With the NWC028SS01, 5 inches at each side turns an 18.90-inch cabinet into a space about 28.90 inches wide.

## Questions to ask before you buy

Send these to the manufacturer and keep the answer with your order.

1. Is this exact model number approved for installation under a counter or inside cabinetry?
2. What are the minimum side, top and back clearances in that setup?
3. Where does the unit vent, and what must stay clear?
4. How far must the door open to remove the shelves?
5. Where's the power cord, and how far can the outlet be?
6. Does any of this change the warranty?

Be exact with the model number. NewAir sells the 29-bottle cabinet in [recessed and non-recessed kickplate versions](https://www.newair.com/products/newair-29-bottle-stainless-steel-built-in-dual-zone-wine-refrigerator) with different SKUs, and the answer may differ between them.

Avoid DIY electrical work to make a slot work. If it needs a new outlet, use a licensed electrician.

For the measuring steps, see [measure before you buy](https://chillshelf.com/guides/measure-before-you-buy/). For a worked example, our [AWR-290DB and NWC028SS01 comparison](https://chillshelf.com/guides/newair-awr-290db-vs-nwc028ss01/) puts one fridge of each type side by side.
